Given enough time, any man may master the physical. With enough knowledge, any man may become wise. It is the true warrior who can master both....and surpass the result
Tien T'ai
We don't have too many rules and the ones that we do have are for your and your classmates safety and comfort, so please be sure that you have read them through and agree with them before training.
Bujinkan Hombu Dojo Guidelines
Firstly, we follow the guidelines as handed down from the central association (Hombu Dojo) in Japan. Please go to their website and read them through.
As regards to the physician's report mentioned, we do not require a written doctor's report to train at our club, however, you should consult your doctor before any physical activity if you feel that you have a medical condition that may be worsened by participation. You are responsible for your own initial health!
Age limitations
Sorry, we do not offer classes for those under 16 years of age. People who are under this age must have a radically different approach to their instruction as their bodies are still developing so a specific children's class should be taken. There are many other arts out there that offer a disciplined, child-specific option, so please check this out. To re-iterate, we do not take under 16s.
There is no upper limit to age. Our grandmaster is in his eighties and still one of the most amazing martial artists alive! However, of course, we repeat that you are responsible for your initial health and capability to train. If in doubt, ask your GP!
The Dojo (Training Hall) and facilities
We train in a Church hall and as such would ask that you respect our hosts and behave appropriately. There is a toilet and small room for changing, a kitchenette with water supply, but it is a minimalist environment. This is not a gym with showers and so on, so don't expect too much!
Saftey in training
Take care of your training partner. When training with others, please take into account that their limits might be different from yours, especially when beginning. Always train at a pace that is acceptable to both of you and if the other asks you to stop something, do so immediately as you may be inadvertantly causing injury. We care for our classmates as much as ourselves, and the atmosphere of mutual respect is one to cultivate.
Also please respect your environment and make sure it is safe to perform a manouever before going ahead. Respect other training partnerships' space, the walls, the edge of the mats... common sense really!
Clothing etc
Please wear "normal" clothing for your journey to class and change into your "training" clothes once you get there. There are many reasons for this, but the main one is for your safety. Someone dressed as a ninja wandering about Paisley is asking for grief.
Always bring socks or tabi to class as barefeet training is not advised in a shared use area. Also, please remove shoes before going onto the mats, as we do not want mud etc where we are going to be rolling around! This is also the Japanese way and it is a good habit to get into if you ever want to train in Japan!
Never wear anything that is delicate or expensive. Occasionally it can't be helped that a tshirt or something gets pulled on and rips. That's just life in a martial arts class, and it's up to you to make sure you're not going to damage anything valuable and that you have backup clothing in case of catastrophic wardrobe malfunction!
The same applies jewellery. We request that anyone who does not wish to remove jewellery "signs off" on it. Ask your instructor for details.
These rules may be updated at any time. Further rules apply as regards insurance, payment etc. A chat with an instructor is the best way to clear up any queries you may have.
